2011 Basic 4WD Skills Course program

The link below will take you to an outline of the dates that have been programmed for training during 2011. The training team will endeavour to ensure that all courses will run, but please be aware that courses may be cancelled due to lack of numbers. If this happens, any participants booked into the course will automatically be carried over to the next course. If these new dates do not suit, please advise the training team as soon as possible to ensure that we have accurate numbers for courses.

If you are unable to complete a course you can carry your training over until the next course, however a participant's enrollment will be finalised if they have not competed their training by the end of the next calendar year from the date that they began their training. This is to reduce the number of carried-over participants that need to be tracked. In this case the participant will need to apply again for the course and pay the applicable training fee.

These conditions are negotiable, the final decision resting with the Club Committee. See the Driver Training officer for more details.

Training Course Introduction

The Bayside Off-Roaders Club has been conducting accredited Driver Training courses for its members since August 2003. As our club is a not for profit organization our driver training courses represent excellent value for money but most importantly, instructs owners of 4WD vehicles in the skills required to safely pilot their vehicle both on and off the road.

Each course is broken up into theory and practical components designed to educate the most experienced member. Courses consist of a workshop night to familiarise participants with 4WD vehicles, discuss how they work and how to inspect them for basic faults. Theory components cover many aspects of driving.  Some of these subjects include:

  • Vehicle types and capabilities
  • How a 4WD works
  • Tyre selection, inflation and use
  • Pre-trip and during trip vehicle equipment and safety inspections
  • Different techniques for driving in varying terrains
  • What is Trip Procedure

The practical component consists of a hands on weekend whereby participants have the opportunity to learn and experience all of the different aspects of basic 4WDing in the field.

Some of the topics covered on the weekend training include:

  • Principles of 4WDriving
  • Stop stall key start recoveries
  • Driving up and down moderate inclines
  • Driving techniques for different terrains
  • Approach, departure and ramp over angles
  • Driving on side slopes
  • Driving through water
  • Changing a tyre in uneven terrain
